steeltable

steel and tempered glass.

The steel table was a design to
test the qualities of mild steel in
tension and to put two old four
foot square laminated glass table
tops to good use.

A welded support frame was
fabricated from inch square steel
hollow sections: adjustable feet
in stainless steel at the tops and
bottoms of each steel table leg
were detailed to support the half
inch thick tempered glass tops as
well as to allow levelling of the
table on an uneven floor.

And in homage to the integrity of
steel in tension, the steel frame
sections were sized for the effect
of lightness, and also to deflect
in the middle of its span, where
the break between the two glass
sheets produced the greatest
loading conditions - an aesthetic
play on the characteristics of
steel in tension.
