timber table

timber and steel.

The timber table began with a
solid hardwood plank almost
three inches thick, eight feet
long and three and a half feet
wide; one requiring no less
than six men to carry. The
client simply needed a frame
that would support the timber
plank as a table top.

The criteria that conceptualised
the frame was straightforward:
it had to be elegant despite the
payload it was to bear. Steel
was chosen for its strength, its
sections gauged and thickness
sized to allow for the moment
forces generated by the dense
timber plane above. And its
welded joints evidenced the
simplest finish with the clean
polish of an angle grinder and
a single coat of epoxy to seal
the metal from rust, capturing
a process of its production as
part of its aesthetic outcome.
