black and white house

three storey bungalow.

The black and white house
was designed after the colonial
houses built by the British when
Malaya was a colony.

The research and design for the
house began with focussed study
on the proportions, details and
colours which characterise the
genre, and possible reasons for
such thereof: despite the strong
identity appearing to govern
houses of the type, numerous
subtle variations made search
for common elements difficult
to understand and pin down.

The design took on a careful
balance of black, white, clay,
concrete and age. Salvaged
clay roof tiles, dark painted
frames and timber trims, ficus
covered raw concrete and brick
form the palette of finishes
intended to bring unfinish to a
freshly built house.
